Project Carthage

Project Carthage was a secret program which we know was being initialized from 1974 through 1994. Franz Hopper was a part of it, possibly leading it, but the rest is mysterious. The exact notion of the project appears to be the ability to interfere or block enemy communications. Whatever the case, Hopper wanted it destroyed, possibly because more sinister forces, such as the French government, wanted to seize control of the project's outcome and use it to their own ends. To meet his goals, Hopper created Lyoko, the staging ground for Carthage's destruction, and XANA, another program designed to destroy Carthage. When Hopper and his daughter Aelita fled to Lyoko to escape secret agents (the Men In Black), XANA imprisoned both and used the information contained in Carthage to try and destroy humanity.

We know that project Carthage involved a huge number of scientists, as we saw a group photo in the end credits. The Carthage project was lead during some years, as a photo from the folder shows Mrs. Hopper pregnant, and Aelita was a young girl when it finished.

• The fifth sector was named Carthage after the project (maybe it was Hopper's humor).
• Because of the fact that Sector 5 was given the name Carthage, some fans have believed that Project Carthage was contained within Lyoko and that the supercomputer was build specifically for this purpose.
