Waldo 'Franz' Schaeffer
From Code Lyoko WIKI
This article is about the person. For the episode, see Franz Hopper (episode).
Waldo Schaeffer (AKA Franz Hopper) was the creator of Lyoko, XANA, and the father of Aelita. He created Lyoko and XANA to be the staging grounds and means of the destruction of Project Carthage, a secret government program he created to monitor enemy communications. By the time he was nearing the end of his completion of Lyoko, he became very paranoid and insane to some degree. He repeated the same day over 2000 times using the Time Reversion feature of the supercomputer to accomplish his goals. At the last moments, he and Aelita fled to Lyoko, only to be attacked by XANA and his monsters. Waldo was captured and taken to an unknown location within Lyoko. He escaped, however, and sacrificed himself for his daughter in The Key. Team Lyoko continued to search for him after that. Aelita found a fragment of Waldo's DNA in Carthage, so she still hoped. In Final Round, Jeremie and Aelita finally managed to track him down in Lyoko's code, but Lyoko was destroyed by XANA before he could be materialized. However, it seems that he escaped to the Internet because he sent a coded message to Team Lyoko from there after Lyoko was destroyed.
He loved playing the piano, as seen in the various visions and the memory sequence that Aelita has. He also had a wife, whose fate remains unknown
Waldo Schaeffer meets his end in Fight to the Finish when he sacrifices himself to power Jeremie's program that destroys XANA once and for all.
[edit] Trivia
- Waldo is voiced by Paul Bandey.
- One real computer scientist was called "Hopper", but writers stated it is a coincidence.
- Waldo Schaeffer is the only character that has been eternally virtualized. It is unknown whether XANA threw him into the Digital Sea or it occured when he forced the Supercomputer to shut down as shown in Aelita.
[edit] Before Season 4
Waldo Schaeffer was only mentioned in the end credits for Season 2, Season 3 and Season 4 on the cover of a confidential folder. He was probably involved with Project Carthage, as his folder contains many pictures of members of Project Carthage, particularly of Franz Hopper.
He was believed to be the leader of the Project Carthage and the boss of the Men In Black.
It was revealed in Wrong Exposure that Waldo Schaeffer is Franz Hopper and that 'Hopper' is his wife Antea's surname and 'Franz' is his middle name.
